In June 2016 we were asked to laser scan the ice house at Cyfarthfa Castle near Merthyr Tydfil to help a team of engineers assess its structural safety, but this posed a bit of a problem...

In order to be able to assess the strength of the roof dome of the restored ice-house at Cyfarthfa Castle, Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council's engineers asked us to carry out a full laser scan of the structure and produce up-to-date drawings for their calculations. Although we could easily get around the external areas and entrance tunnel, the inside shaft had a 5m drop from where the entrance tunnel joined it with no safe way of getting the scanner to the bottom of the shaft to scan the inside of the domed chamber. Using an extending tripod, some plasterer's props, a length of rope and plenty of cable ties we were able to hang our £40,000 laser scanner over the shaft and safely capture every detail. You can explore the point cloud 3D capture of the ice house using the viewer below - use your scroll wheel to zoom in and out, hold your left mouse button to orbit and the right button to pan.
